Calgary's 7-0 First Quarter Sinks Rock

CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Roughnecks (6-3) raced out of the gate and never looked back in defeating the Toronto Rock (4-6) by a score of 19-13 on Saturday night in Calgary at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Rock were only outshot 16-14 in the opening quarter but found themselves in a deep hole, trailing 7-0 after 15 minutes of play.  Three of their seven goals were scored with the man advantage.

Toronto’s offence got rolling in the second quarter scoring six times, unfortunately for the second quarter in a row the defence surrendered seven goals and the Rock trailed 14-6 at the half.

The Rock did what they needed to do to begin the second half.  Ethan O’Connor scored right off the faceoff and Kasey Beirnes scored before the quarter was a minute old. Toronto went on to outscore the Roughnecks 4-1 in the quarter but still trailed 15-10.

Toronto had a two-man powerplay to start the fourth quarter but could only muster one goal.  15-11 was the closest the Rock would get on the evening as the Roughnecks held on for the victory.

Colin Doyle continued to reach some significant milestones as he collected his 800th career assist and also scored his 1300th career point.

Stephan Leblanc led all Rock goal scorers with 5 tallies while Kasey Beirnes, Garrett Billings and Rob Hellyer all scored a pair.  Singles went to O’Connor and Doyle.

Toronto returns home after a bye week for a St .Paddy’s Day matchup with the Rochester Knighthawks on Saturday, March 15th at 7pm at Air Canada Centre.  For more information, please visit or phone 416-596-3075 to speak with a ticket representative get your hands on the BEST ticket in town.

Once again White's aggression puts his team in an early hole and they cannot climb out. How many chances does this guy get? Nick Rose is either crazy good or just plain awful - often in the same game. For whatever reason coach Lovell has no faith in Boychuk. How else to explain 7 goals on 15 shots in the second quarter; after surrendering 7 on 18 shots in the 1st - albeit aided by Whites goonery and subsequent 5 minute major, but how is Rose still in net when the second quarter ends? faceoff efficiency of just 30% again... Can't win that way. Just wasting good offensive efforts. 13 goals should be enough to win when the other guys only get 50 shots despite Whites major. This season could go down in flames if they don't curtail White, Pull Rose when he is obviously having an off night and get someone who can win a faceoff...
