The Professor becomes The Coach

TORONTO - Glenn Clark, a five-time champion as a player with the Toronto Rock, will go behind the bench in the 2007 season to try to bring Toronto its sixth National Lacrosse League championship in the club's history.

The 36-year-old physical education teacher at Bayview Secondary School in Richmond Hill said he is excited about the opportunity.

"In my mind it's the #1 place to be, it's the best job in lacrosse. To be able to come back and start again with this organization is fantastic. It's the only job that would have made me consider retiring," said Clark, who also announced his retirement as a player today. As per club policy, terms of the coaching contract were not disclosed.

As an established defensive player in the league, Clark spent most of his career in Toronto before one final season in 2006 as a member of the Philadelphia Wings.

Clark, who represented the Wings at the 2006 NLL All-Star Game in Toronto, steps behind the bench to pass along the great lessons he has learned in the pros.

"This is a great opportunity to move this great franchise forward," said Clark.

"We're taking the team in a new direction. Bringing Glenn back to the Rock is an important step moving forward," said Rock President Brad Watters. "As a key member of the Rock alumni, Glenn understands the passion and deep tradition that is with the Rock."

Clark, who was a defensive specialist and a key penalty killer, has over 20 years of lacrosse experience and was a member of the 2003 World Indoor Lacrosse Champion Team Canada squad. He was acquired by the Ontario Raiders in the 1998 NLL Entry Draft by the Ontario Raiders (27th overall).

This summer, Clark will be a player-coach with the Barrie Lakeshores in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Major Series. In 1999, Clark spent a large part of the season on the bench with then head coach Les Bartley and assistant Ed Comeau.

Watters said the Rock will continue to seek a new director of player personnel and expect to fill the role over the summer.
