Training Camp Rolls On

Oakville, ON – Toronto Rock training camp continued on Tuesday evening at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre (TRAC) in Oakville, Ontario.  The second day of camp had a decidedly crisper feel as the battle for jobs intensified with Saturday’s first exhibition scrimmage rapidly approaching.

“That was our second good practice in a row and the boys have come to camp in shape,” said assistant coach Matt Sawyer.  “They are working hard.  The longer we are together, the clearer the picture will become.   We are waiting until the exhibition game on Saturday to get a real read on some of these guys in game situations.  I’m looking forward to Saturday.”

A lot of the younger faces in camp will get a chance to show their worth in Saturday’s exhibition game.  Without having a lot of veterans in the lineup, the players with something to prove will get that chance.

“It’s the reality of preseason,” said Sawyer of the inexperience that is often seen in early preseason exhibition rosters.  “At the same time it’s an opportunity.  We are looking for guys who want to make a difference.   You can’t throw caution to the wind, but if guys are playing tentative and thinking about what they should be doing, they won’t show their best.  We are looking for someone who is going to be assertive and willing to do what they can to make us better.  We’ll try to identify that as coaches.”

One player who will be trying to make an impact is goaltender Steve Fryer who spent the bulk of his time in Toronto last year on the practice roster.  Veterans Brandon Miller and Nick Rose occupied the two goaltender spots on the active roster at season’s end.

“It feels good and it’s great being back with the Rock,” said Fryer.  “Any time I can get in the net is key for me if I want to crack this roster.  It’s going to be tough with Nick and Brandon there, but I just have to do what I do best and stop the ball and see what happens.”

The Rock will face Calgary on Saturday night at 7pm at the TRAC.  There is no charge for admission, however fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Kerr Street Ministries food bank in Oakville.  Doors will open at 6pm and seating for the game is limited.

Josh Sanderson was on the floor and participated fully in the second day of camp and looked sharp.  Shawn Williams and Garrett Billings were absent from Tuesday’s session.  Bill Greer, Jesse Gamble and Damon Edwards all had maintenance days.  Patrick Merrill participated in non-contact drills.
