Well….we all knew it would happen sooner or later. For fans like me, I was sort of hoping that #32 would just keep playing for ever. But…as you are no doubt aware, Jim Veltman, one of the very best to ever play box lacrosse, is retiring his playing career at the end of the current National Lacrosse League season. The integrity and passion which have been the hallmark of his play is deserving of recognition by his many fans.
Both on and off the floor, he has given his all. And he always makes the time for any fan who wants to talk to him, perhaps request a picture or an autograph. He is never too busy.
And for those of us who have the pleasure of knowing him away from the game, this man shows everyone around him daily that his delight in being able to play the game is the same as the joy he derives from everything he does.
As one of his most devoted fans, I am working on a special project to give all of his admirers the opportunity to thank him for his contribution to the Creator’s game. To that end, I have a request which will require nothing more than a little of your time.
A book is being put together with memories for Jim and his family to enjoy. In my experience, almost everyone who has ever seen him play, from the stands or opposite him on the floor, are fans, albeit begrudgingly at times. Because even when he is on the winning end against “your” team, one can’t help but admire the skills and leadership he brings to the game.
This man who is not of a particularly athletic build continues, through experience and sheer determination, to play the game at a competitive level at an age long past what many could even imagine.
And so to my request. Many of you have a special memory, unique to you. Perhaps it is a play you witnessed from the stands, a handshake, a discussion at a post game party, a raising of the Champion’s Cup. Please take the time to share that with Jim, through me and the friends who are helping with this project.
Your stories, memories can be sent directly to me at … goddessoflacrosse@rogers.com
And please pass this along to anyone in your lacrosse world that you believe might be interested.
Thank you, in advance, for helping to give Jim something that will remind him daily of his gift to the game he loves so much.
